  • Heat related problems:
    Heat stroke
    Heat exhaustion
    Cramps
    Fainting

  • To minimize heat related problems:
    Drink cool water, about 8 oz. every 15 - 20 min.
    Drink as many ounces of water as you weigh in pounds every day
    Wear cool-light colored clothing
    Don't eat a large meal before working in a hot environment
    Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages
    Rest in a cool area if you start to feel the effects of the heat

  • Watch your co-workers for signs of heat stress:
    Headaches
    Dizziness or lightheadedness
    Weakness
    Irritability or confusion
    Upset stomach/vomiting
    Decreased or dark-colored urine
    Fainting or passing out
    Pale, clammy skin

  • What to do if your co-workers show signs of heat stress:
    Move victim to cool, shaded area
    Lay victim on his/her back with legs raised 6-8 inches
    If nauseous, lay on side
    Loosen or remove heavy clothing
    Spray cool mist of water or apply wet cloth to skin
    Drink cool water every 15 min.
    Call 911 if not better shortly

  • Prevention:
    Wear layers of clothing
    Windproof outer shell
    Insulated hard hat or liner
    Insulated gloves
    2 pairs of socks
    Restrict exposure time when temperatures approach 0 deg or a wind chill of -22 deg

  • Safety in cold environments:
    Examine work areas for hazards from snow and ice
    Remove snow and ice from walkways
    De-ice equipment
    Apply salt where needed
    Examine high-walls for cracks and instability
